In our class, we try to ensure that we expose students to all the major holidays and celebrations recognized by families in our school. This month The TDSB recognizes African Heritage Month as well as Chinese Heritage Month.
Our exposure includes reading books, showing videos, and sometimes creating art or craft that represents the celebration. Epic is an excellent resource that provides a wide range of reading materials at different levels for students. We often invite parents who are willing to come into our class to share about specific celebrations or holidays. The COVID19 pandemic has presented some limitations to this inclusion, however, we continue to find creative ways to engage students and get them to understand what other families celebrate.
African Heritage Month
Throughout the month students will be introduced to individuals in the African American community who have made significant contributions in many different fields. It is very important that students are introduced to their history and at any age in the learning process, we can break things down to their level to be able to appreciate where they are coming from. This year, the theme for African Heritage Month is Self Determination. The black community is very diverse and resilient. In kindergarten, we introduce students to many individuals and showcase their contributions not just to Canada but to other countries around the world.
It is important that we create a safe space for all students to feel welcomed and represented. Self Determination is a relevant theme in light of all the challenges faced by everyone in the last year. Our students have been faced with so many changes and adjustments in their learning. However, they have managed to pull through and with the support of administration, teachers, and parents, they continue to work hard.
